Uruguay

Littoral: This region is made up of the counties of: Paysandu, Soriano, and Rio Negro. The counties stretch down the River Plate from Colonia to Montevideo. This region is famous for its agriculture, and dairy farms. Some of the ranches here are owned by the oldest Colonial Spanish families in the country, and this area is more developed than many of the interior counties like Rocha, and Cebollati—where duck hunting in Uruguay is most popular.

The farms in the Littoral are smaller than those of the interior counties, but also more valuable, and usually more profitable. The soil is very fertile, and citrus production is big business. Cheese, milk, and butter are also produced here on the many dairy farms that can be found throughout the region.

The country of Colonia—where Los Gauchos has recently opened its newest destination for dove hunting in Uruguay, was originally colonized by Swiss immigrants—and Swiss families still control a large part of the dairy production in this area, as well as many farms that grow wheat.

The northern portion if the Littoral was given an economic lift by the opening of the Salto Grande Reservoir Dam in 1971. This dam spans the length of the Uruguay River, and is an impressive sight to behold. Fishing in Uruguay for Golden Dorado is very popular just below the dam, and some of the largest dorado in South America are caught here.

On the other hand, the closure of a large meat plant in the city of Fray Bentos (a city on the Argentine border in the Southern Littoral) turned the city into a ghost town, leaving thousands unemployed. Some of these Uruguayans later found work in the area in smaller farms, but most left for a life of more prosperity in Montevideo.

Additionally, many jobs were created with the erection of the Artigas Bridge. This bridge connects the Argentine province of Entre Rios to the Uruguayan city of Paysandu. This is a heavily used route that connects people, goods, and ideas between these two neighboring nations.

However, just a few years later a more direct (although serpentine) route was developed to connect Buenos Aires to Montevideo and reduced some of the passenger traffic on the Artigas Bridge, with passengers and cargo instead flowing over the Rio Plata via Colonia. Buenos Aires and Colonia are also connected heavily in the sea trade, with many cargo ships making the crossing daily. Passengers can also cross easily by sea on the Buquebus—a private company that operates a hydrofoil that carries over 400 passengers, and megatons of freight and automobiles.

Dove hunting in Uruguay in the county of Colonia is an easy proposition with Los Gauchos. We offer weekend specials in Buenos Aires at several four and five star hotels with whom we have contracts, and it makes it easy to go fishing in Uruguay as well—since the cities of Salto and Paysandu are easily accessible by ground transport.
